Nearly two million American workers report having been victims of workplace violence each year, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Employers have a responsibility to provide a safe work environment and empower staff with the tools they need for effective prevention and safe intervention. Failure to do so has resulted in fines of up to $70,000 and loss of staff which can cost thousands of dollars in recruiting, hiring, orientation, training, lost time, and lost productivity.
OSHA recommends that healthcare and social services organizations incorporate a written program for workplace violence prevention into the organization's overall safety and health program. Their guidelines for developing an effective workplace violence prevention program include:

2. Worksite analysis and hazard identification
3. Hazard prevention and control
4. Safety and health training
5. Recordkeeping and program evaluation
