WorkplaceViolencePrevention

Nearly two million American workers report having been victims of workplace violence each year, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Employers have a responsibility to provide a safe work environment and empower staff with the tools they need for effective prevention and safe intervention. Failure to do so has resulted in fines of up to $70,000 and loss of staff which can cost thousands of dollars in recruiting, hiring, orientation, training, lost time, and lost productivity.

OSHA recommends that healthcare and social services organizations incorporate a written program for workplace violence prevention into the organization's overall safety and health program. Their guidelines for developing an effective workplace violence prevention program include:

1. Management commitment and employee participation
2. Worksite analysis and hazard identification
3. Hazard prevention and control
4. Safety and health training
5. Recordkeeping and program evaluation

Philadelphia Insurance Companies and The Crisis Prevention Institute, Inc. (CPI) have partnered together to help organizations create effective workplace violence prevention programs. CPI's comprehensive crisis prevention and intervention training helps organizations reduce the number of physical incidents they encounter, lower workers comp claims, meet regulatory compliance, and build staff confidence and competence around prevention.

CPI has been training professionals in education, healthcare, human services, and other industries in early prevention, de-escalation and safe physical intervention strategies for 37 years. CPI's philosophy of Care, Welfare, Safety and SecuritySM is inherently person-centered and takes into consideration a multitude of variables within each population, such as trauma-informed care, autism spectrum disorders, mental health, and many other factors that contribute to student, patient, caregiver, and staff behaviors. The foundation train-the-trainer program, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, is an evidence-based four-day program designed within the context of adult learning theory, and gives staff safe crisis intervention tools and skills to bring back to their organization.
