What attracted you to PHLY?
I actually lucked into a career at Philadelphia Insurance Companies (PHLY). I was working down in San Diego, CA at Golden Eagle Insurance quite happily when my husband was transferred up to the Riverside area. For about six months we commuted four-hours a day before we decided to move up to Orange County. Immediately when I started thinking about moving a recruiter called me up and told me about a renewal position with a small insurance company called Philadelphia Insurance. I had never heard of PHLY before but decided to check it out. One interview with Tim Maguire was enough to sell me on PHLY. I was so impressed to hear how much the office was growing and the lofty goals he had in mind for the region. I knew I wanted to be a part of such an exciting organization.
How would you describe the culture at PHLY?
The best description I have for the culture here is “friendly competition.” The spirit and camaraderie in our region is fantastic with underwriters and marketing representatives really working together as a team. The visibility of goals helps everyone know how they are doing in reaching their individual goals. We have a replica of the Liberty Bell in our office that we ring every time we bind a new business account over $100K which helps keep the spirit of “Joy at Work” alive.
What is your favorite company sponsored event?
Honestly there are too many to choose from! Each quarter one of the four departments in our office plans a volunteer event with a local charity. The charities and type of events are constantly changing. The one mainstay has been our connection with the Second Harvest Food Bank. For the past five-years, we have volunteered by staffing their food drive at the Orange County Fair (courtesy of sponsorship by the underwriting department of course!). Another fun time is our summer party that usually includes the whole family – it’s so great to meet your co-workers spouses and kids, you really see a whole new side of them!
As a manager, what do you look for when hiring new employees?
I want someone who not only believes they are the best, but wants to prove it too! I want every employee that I hire to be better than me so that as PHLY grows we have the team in place to grow with us. Every employee that I hire is someone who I see as a Superstar.
